Brutal Legend
Brutal Legend is a brutally awesome game that comes from the mind of Tim Shafer. The main character Eddie Riggs (Played by Jack Black!) is a roadie for a band that pretty much sucks. Through a twist of fate he gets thrown into a world of metal, and he has to save this new awesome world.
I know this game came out quite a while ago and a lot of people have played it already, but my friend bout it recently for $10 so I got a chance to play that shit. Here's what I thought about it.
Gameplay
In the beginning of the game it allows you to choose weather or not you want there to bear swearing and then weather or not you want there to be awesome gore. So you can make the game PG if you want, but you want to see the game in all of its splendid gorey...I mean glory, don't you? Of course you do!
Brutal Legend has some controls that take a bit of getting used to. On the PS3 you press X to attack with your giant axe and Square to use your magical guitar.
Did I mention you have a magical guitar? It can do a wide variety of things. Such as attack enemies with lightning strikes or cause small earthquakes.
You can also collect solos from alters around the world that will do various attacks by making you press in button commands kind of like guitar hero style but with the controller buttons instead of the colors. These attacks are freakin' awesome and amazing. Like the Face Melter which causes many enemies faces to melt and the Zeppelin which causes a burning zeppelin to come crashing to the ground where you stand! Thus killing everything around you or at least severely damaging it.
The guitar can also do solos like rally troops, which allows you to recruit allies in some areas. There is also a solo that allows you to make relics and garages rise from the ground. The relics give you new songs to listen to while you are drive around or near your deuce, and the garages will take you to a place where Ozzy Osbourne is the guardian of metal. There you can buy new upgrades to your axe or buy new attack combos. You can also upgrade your deuce there.
Okay I have mentioned the deuce twice and you are probably wondering what the hell it is if you are one of the few people that havn't played this game. The Deuce is an awesome hot rod, dune buggy-like car that you can summon almost anywhere by playing a solo on that awesome guitar of yours!
Driving the car is pretty fun, its not completely fluid but the world is pretty open in most places and this thing can climb almost anything anyway so you're good. You are going to need the deuce to get around this huge landscape.
The game play is pretty fun though. You hack and slash glam rock and goth rock guys to pieces and form armies! Yes!
In some levels of the game you have to form an army by spending points to summon various different soldiers you get throughout the story of the game. You start out with headbangers, then you get these awesome girls that soot guns after another mission, and later in the game you find ones like these big ape cat things that breathe fire!
You have to summon soldiers to fight in various battles where you have to make merch booths to create more soldiers. You also have to command your soldiers around the battlefield to take enemy merch booths, and ultimately take the enemy stage. The stage acts like the HQ of the battle where the merch booths act like defenses against the enemy.
Ultimately I think the game play is pretty good, it takes a little getting used to and is a little repetitive but the game is still fun to play in my opinion.
Score: 7/10
Sound
This game has one of the best soundtracks ever to be put into a game and has some awesome voice actors! This game has Slayer, Cradle of Filth and other metal bands, there are also some great 80's metal bands in there. There is some Ozzy Osbourne music and he plays as a voice actor to himself, as the guardian of metal!
Brutal Legend has an awesome soundtrack that I never got tired of listening to in the game and you could switch the songs any time you wanted while you are in your deuce. Like I said this game has one of the best soundtracks ever to be put into a game.
Score: 10/10
Story
The story of Brutal Legend is pretty epic. Eddie Riggs gets transported from his normal life as a roadie on Earth to his new awesome life as a warlord brutal battle roadie in the metal world. There he has to save the people of metal from the evils of the demon. The demon that controls goth rock, the demon the glam rock sold out to.
You travel the world in search of member for your band...err...generals for your war and roadies for your ba...err...soldiers for your army...and you have to fight back against the demon by defeating his generals. General Lionwhite is the first, his is 80's glam rock hair band at it's worst, play it....you'll see. Then later you fight against another general who shall remain nameless.
The characters say hilarious things and are put through an epic and awesome story to save the metal world from evils grasp. However the story, although epic and awesome is not very long. I beat it pretty quickly so that is a problem. The game is pretty difficult even on the easiest difficulty but it is still easily beatable because eventually you will be revived by crowd surfing on your spirit like fans!
Overall the story is fun and awesome but it sucks that it's so short. However there are a lot of side missions to do, and relics and garages and stuff to find!
Score: 7/10
Replay value
Like I said before there are plenty of things to find even after you beat the main story in the game. You can find relics and unlock new songs, find garages and upgrade your equipment or your deuce! Or even buy several different things. You can find new solos to fight with. You can unlock dozens of dragon statues across the vast land. You can even find relics that unlock a story that tells you about the story of Armagodden the metal beast and you can learn the history of the world of metal! You can also explore the vast world completely and do the many respawning side quests to get more points to spend in the garages....and when you get bored you can always listen to awesome music. However the side quests can get a little repetitive.
Score: 8.5/10
Overall
Overall this game is fun to play and I liked it a lot, the sound track is amazing and the storyline is fun. I recommend you buy this game, but due to the repetitiveness of it. It's best that you only buy it if you got a deal like my friend did....or you could do what I did and borrow it!
Overall Score : 7.5/10
